Strategic Decision-Making Using SWOT Analysis and the APPNIE Model: A Healthcare Case Study

  •  Simone Pozzessere

Abstract

This article proposes an innovative approach that combines traditional Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis with the Actual-Potential, Positive-Negative, Internal-External (APPNIE) model. This framework is applied to a case study focused on identifying the optimal location for a new Molecular Biology Laboratory (MBL) in Tuscany, Italy. The selection process integrates quantitative scores based on established guidelines with qualitative assessments of future potential and contextual factors by incorporating APPNIE's dynamic dimensions with SWOT's structured overview. This approach enhances decision-making objectivity, optimizes resource use, and facilitates timely implementation. The case study demonstrates the value of this integrated framework for strategic decision-making in healthcare, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and adaptability in real-world applications.
