This article regards Saussure’s social, static and structural perspective and Chomsky’s individual, generative and formal perspective as two revolutions in linguistics in the 20^th century. A third revolution is already on the way. This is characterised by considering the individual’s mental mechanisms in relation to the interplay between verbal and non-verbal cognitive activities.
