Integrating Local Cultural Knowledge into Design and Art Education: Curriculum Development Based on Quyang Stone Carving for Cultural Inheritance and Creative Learning

Abstract

Local cultural heritage plays an important role in enriching design and art education while supporting the preservation of traditional crafts. Quyang stone carving, a representative form of Chinese intangible cultural heritage with a long historical tradition, embodies unique artistic techniques, aesthetic values, and cultural symbolism. However, the integration of such traditional knowledge into contemporary design education remains limited. This study aims to explore how local cultural knowledge of Quyang stone carving can be incorporated into design and art education through curriculum development to promote cultural inheritance and creative learning. A qualitative research approach was adopted, including literature review, field investigation, interviews with artisans and educators, and analysis of teaching practices. Based on these findings, a curriculum framework integrating cultural knowledge, craft practice, and creative design was developed. The results show that integrating traditional craft knowledge into design education can enhance students’ cultural awareness, stimulate creative thinking, and support the sustainable transmission of local cultural heritage. This study provides practical insights for integrating intangible cultural heritage into contemporary design and art education.
