Stone Carving: The Role of Cultural Heritage in Creative Art Education and Learning in Quyang

Abstract

This study focuses on the integration of traditional cultural heritage with modern creative design through the art of Quyang stone carving. The objectives of the study are to 1) the history and development of Quyang stone carving. 2) the artistic form and cultural connotation of Quyang stone carving 3) apply stone carving culture to Quyang artistic creative design. The research methodology is qualitative, including a literature review, field surveys, and in-depth interviews with key informants knowledgeable about Quyang stone carving. The research examines the history, development, and challenges of preserving this art, as well as its adaptation to modern design. The study is conducted in Yangping Town, Quyang County, which is known as the center for this traditional craft. The findings reveal that Quyang stone carving, originating in the Han Dynasty, has become an integral part of Chinese cultural heritage. The art form evolved from simple sculptures to intricate architectural designs and religious symbols. The Silk Road played a significant role in cultural exchanges that influenced Chinese stone carving techniques. The artistic forms of Quyang stone carving not only provide aesthetic beauty but also carry deep cultural and philosophical meanings, reflecting religious values and social ideals. The application of Quyang stone carving in creative design has become a new way to merge traditional art with modern innovation. By integrating ancient techniques into products like home and garden decorations, this study shows how traditional art can be adapted to meet contemporary needs while preserving cultural significance. The fusion of heritage and innovation not only preserves the art but also contributes to the local economy. This study demonstrates how the integration of traditional art into modern design practices can help maintain cultural heritage while addressing global market demands.
