  •  Adeeb Qasim Hakami

Abstract

There have been a number of historical, cultural, and scholarly changes in the development of the study of English translation in Saudi Arabia. The provided work is an effort to critically analyse the past of English translation studies in Saudi Arabia since the earliest before the Islamic era and emergence and growth of the translation tradition in the country through to the 2000s. These are decades of profound cultural, scholarly, and historical changes that affected the idea and method of translation, especially translation into English. The review will consider both the intellectual and practice-oriented aspects, which have determined the English translation studies in Saudi Arabia. In this review study, the primary and secondary literature will be considered to determine significant achievements in translation theory, practice, institutional and academic input towards Saudi Arabia as a place of influence based on influential players, socio-political context, and role in translation development. This review seeks to provide a general historical overview of translation in Saudi Arabia and contribute to the body of knowledge of the role of Saudi Arabia in world translation studies. This work provides information about the development of English translation studies, their incorporation within a larger educational and cultural framework, and issues and opportunities in the translation practices in Saudi Arabia--also, the study will assess how translation practices influenced communication between the English and Arabic, and will assess the effects of recent globalization and technological changes to the translation studies in the nation. Review methodology is a planned and systematic methodology, which involves the use of the qualitative systematic review method to collect and analyse data (both primary and secondary) through the usage of literature as a source of data, including academic journals and academic articles.
