Abstract

The development of English translation studies in Saudi Arabia has evolved through various historical, cultural, and academic transformations. This research aims to systematically review the development of English translation studies in Saudi Arabia, tracing its evolution from the early pre-Islamic era and the origins and progress of translation practices in the region to the 2000s. This period marks significant cultural, academic, and historical shifts that influenced how translation was perceived and practiced, particularly focusing on translating texts into English. The review will evaluate both the intellectual underpinnings and practical dimensions that shaped English translation studies in Saudi Arabia. This review study will examine primary and secondary sources to shed light on the significant milestones in translation theory, practice, institutional and academic contributions within Saudi Arabia, taking into account influential figures, the socio-political context, and its effect on the development of translation. The review aims to provide a comprehensive historical overview of translation in Saudi Arabia and contribute to understanding its place within global translation studies. This study offers insights into how English translation studies have evolved, how they are situated within broader cultural and educational systems, and the challenges and opportunities in translation practices in Saudi Arabia—also, analysed how translation practices shaped communication between Arabic and English, and will explore the impact of modern globalization and technological advances on translation studies in the country. The methodology for the review follows a systematic and structured approach, employing a qualitative systematic review methodology to gather and evaluate both primary and secondary sources—Literature from diverse sources, including academic journals, and scholarly articles.
