Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the determinants of demand for street medicines in the Republic of Congo. Based on a statistical analysis of survey data, the following variables—the occupation of the purchasers of these medicines, their income, their level of education, and their assessment of the effectiveness of medicines imported from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—represent the determinants of demand for street medicines. Eradicating the sale of these illegal medicines requires the implementation of a better public policy on medicine prices, their availability, and the accessibility of healthcare for the entire population. Coordination of sub- regional health policies between Congo and its neighboring countries also appears necessary.
