Empowering Women in Jordanian Legislation

Abstract

Objectives: Women's rights have become the focus of attention of many researchers and decision-makers in many countries of the world. Therefore, this topic has dominated many international and local conferences and forums to advance women, empower them, and achieve equality with men on the political, economic, and social levels. To enrich the empowerment, there are special laws passed that prescribe women’s rights and empower them internationally as well as at the domestic level. Thus, the purpose of this study is to uncover the state of empowering women in Jordan and to what degree the Jordanian legislator has facilitative the Jordanian women's empowerment by enacting or amending the new legal legislation added to the Jordanian constitution.

Methods: A descriptive approach, was used to reveal to what extent Jordanian legislation is eligible to empower women in Jordan as well as integrate them into their society. In addition, Analytical approach, which was used to explore legal provisions concerning women's empowerment in Jordan.

Results: The study concluded wityh a set of results among them were that Jordan has made numerous efforts in the enhancement of women’s status in different sectors and tiers. Nonetheless, women are still fewer in the political and economic sectors compared to men in many companies globally and locally.

Conclusions: Jordan has taken clear steps towards empowering women. In this context, The Jordanian legislator has enacted several legal provisions that guarantee women's rights and empower them. Despite the level achieved for women in Jordan compared to many countries, there is still a gap between the reality of women achieving all their rights the level of their empowerment and the goals set by the strategic plan for women's empowerment. Therefore, Jordan is striving to achieve these goals so that women can be on the same level as men in various work affairs, similar to what developed countries have achieved in women's empowerment.
