The Cost of Cancer Care: Navigation Challenges to Participation in Phase I Clinical Trials

Wanda Strange, Shannon Cagnina, Cynthia Bedell, John J. Nemunaitis

Abstract

Phase I trial participation for advanced cancer patients is often a “last resort” in an attempt to control progressive disease. It is also a necessary component mandated by our investigative community and FDA to characterize safety and mechanism via dose and schedule modulation of experimental therapeutics. Participation in phase I studies is difficult without support. The purpose of this assessment is to provide mechanisms of support established by nurse navigation to facilitate phase I trial patient participation.
